ECB South West Regional Finals

|
Indoor 2010
Godmanchester Town were crowned ECB Indoor Six-a-Side National Club champions for the first time in their history after beating Poole Town at Lord's.
Poole Town Cricket Club seeking Lords glory
This coming Sunday Poole Town Cricket Club are heading for Lords having reached the semi-finals in the ECB National Indoor 6-a-side championships. It is the second time in the last year that the Club has achieved success in a national competition, its Under 13s reached the last 16 of the MCC Spirit of Cricket National Club Championship in August, beating the champions of Hampshire on the way.
Poole are representing Dorset in the Nationals for the third year in a row. Having beaten the champions of the Isle of Wight, the side qualified for the South West Regional Finals at Taunton.
In the first game at Taunton Poole faced Ynystawe from Wales. Poole won the toss and elected to field. Whilst the Welsh openers made a good start, reaching 50 for no wicket, good bowling from Kristian and Steve Wilson restricted Ynystawe to 100 for 5 in 12 overs. In reply Jamie Thomas, Steve Wilson and Dave Miller all reached 25 and retired before Poole won by 6 wickets.
In the Regional Final Poole faced Sampford Arundel from Somerset. Poole were asked to bat. Steve Wilson, Dave Miller and Martin Miller all reached 25 as Poole set Sampford Arundel 125 to win. A tight opening spell from Martin Ford (taking 1 wicket for 7 runs in 3 overs) put Sampford Arundel well behind the rate. Once again Kristian and Steve Wilson bowled well, taking 2 wickets each. Poole won by 55 runs.
The squad of 7 for the Finals was: Dave Miller, Martin Ford, Jamie Thomas, Kristian Wilson, Steve Wilson, Ben Dyson and John Fairless.
Having beaten County Durham's Blaydon CC in the semi-final, Poole were comfortably beaten by Godmanston Town from Huntingdonshire in the final. In doing so Poole came 2nd out of 730 teams which initially entered the competition.
In the semi-final against Blaydon CC, Poole were asked to bat first. Having lost an early wicket Jamie Thomas (24) and Dave Miller got Poole off to a good start. A mini batting collapse followed but Dave Miller (50 not out) returned to the crease having retired and joined forces with Martin Ford (34 not out) as Poole scored 129 for 4 off their 12 overs. Tight bowling from Thomas and Ford meant that Blaydon were never going to race to victory. Whilst behind the rate Blaydon had wickets in hand and half way through their innings appeared to be slight favourites to win. This all changed in one Kristian Wilson over in which 3 wickets fell including 2 run outs by Steve Wilson, who also took two wickets bowling. Blaydon finished on 116 for 5 to give Poole victory by 13 runs.
In the final Poole were also asked to bat first. Against accurate bowling and lively fielding Poole neither managed to score quickly nor keep wickets in hand. Jamie Thomas scored 21 and a late flourish by Dave Miller (42 not out) and Ben Dyson (24) saw Poole reach 118 for 5. Godmanchester set about reaching their target with confidence, reaching 85 for no wicket in the first 6 overs. Although Steve and Kristian Wilson took a wicket each, Godmanchester won by 4 wickets with more than an over to spare.

Indoor 2007/8

Winners of both the Midweek Cup and Division 2.
Back row: Gavin Clarke , Martin Ford, Dave Miller
Front row: Steve Wilson, Kris Wilson, Jamie Bennett |
Poole Town CC Indoors 2007/2008
Division 1 Champions
The 1 st VI won the weekend Division 1 for the second consecutive year and was unbeaten, having won most games comfortably. Consistently good bowling from Jamie Thomas, Martin Ford, Kris and Steve Wilson regularly restricted opponents to low totals which made life easier with the bat. The all round abilities of those mentioned were complimented with solid batting performances from Jamie Bennett and Dave Miller . The side will now play the winners of the north Dorset final to determine who will represent the county in the national tournament next year.
Division 2 Frustration
The 2 nd VI had a frustrating season. A playing record of won 1 lost 5 represented relegation form. Whilst most of the matches were close, we generally only fulfilled our potential with either bat or ball. It was rare that we did both well at the same time. The exception was the game against Bournemouth 2nds which we won. After the game they were amazed that we had not won a game whilst we were somewhat surprised that we had just beaten the league leaders. So we hope for some better performances (and luck) next winter.
But Division 3Promotion
The 3 rd VI won Div 3 after coming close in the last few seasons. It is not always easy to get the same six players out every game, due to other commitments players have during the winter. But special mention should be made to a few players who did form the nucleus of the side. Gavin Clarke did a sterling job as captain this season, and led from the front with solid all round performances with bat and ball. Ian Musselwhite got us off to a good start in the majority of games, and also did a great job behind the stumps. Ciaran Quinn, who stepped up from the 4 th VI, also deserves a mention as he was very able with bat and ball, a great prospect for the future.
Division 4 Stability
The 4 th VI enjoyed a steady indoor season finishing in a mid table position. Some good batting and bowling performances were enjoyed throughout the side and the all round abilities of Kieran Quinn boosted our results. The last match of the season was won against Bournemouth Ladies and this ensured our division four status! Thanks to Dave Porter for skippering the side to all who supported us.
Midweek Double
The midweek side contained many of the weekend 1 st VI and consequently, managed to win Division 2 and the knockout cup. Only one game was lost to title challengers Corinthians on a night when five of the regular eight man squad were unavailable. That result was reversed in the semi finals of the cup with a 72 run victory which pitched us against Ferndown in the final. Our opponents posted a challenging total of 158 but with useful contributions from J Bennett, D Miller and S Wilson, the winning runs were hit with four balls to spare and the silverware was won.
