Poole Town Cricket Club
An introduction to Junior Cricket

A Brief History

Poole Town Cricket Club was formed when Poole Cricket Club merged with Poole Old Grammarians Cricket Club in 1992.  Poole Cricket Club’s history can be traced back to 1891 whilst Poole Old Grammarians CC was formed in 1928.  Initially the merged club was called Poole Old Grammarians & Poole Cricket Club but the name was changed to Poole Town Cricket Club in 2002 to reflect our status as the biggest club in Poole.

Poole Town Cricket Club has achieved ECB Clubmark status, which is the cricket club accreditation scheme operated by the England and Wales Cricket Board in partnership with Sport England.  We are also one of Dorset’s 15 Focus Clubs.

The junior section

Both Poole CC and Poole Old Grammarians CC set up youth sections in the late 1970s.  In the last 10 years there has been a significant increase in the number of young players wanting to play cricket such that our membership numbers have increased from less than 20 to over 100 during this period.

Our junior committee comprises:

Dave Porter – Chairman and Club Welfare Officer (07713 003161)
Nick Williams – Secretary and Treasurer (07703 496222; nicko.williams@yahoo.co.uk)
Selwyn Curtis – Assistant Secretary and Fixture Secretary (07760 246248)
Steve Wilson – Head Coach (07725 953218)
All of the team managers listed below.

Recent successes

In 2009 Poole Town CC sides won the East Dorset Under 13, Under 14 and Under 15 leagues, whilst our Under 15s are the current indoor league champions.

Our Under 13s won the Blackmore Vale Trophy in 2009 and, as County champions, represented Dorset in the National Championships where they reached the last 16, beating the champions of the Isle of Wight and Hampshire on the way.

Our adult 1st VI has just come runners-up in the Indoor League National Championships, the finals of which were held at Lords on Sunday 14 March 2010.  In doing so they came a remarkable 2nd out of 730 teams entering the competition.

Membership forms

When you join the Club (or even if you only wish to come along to a practice or two to see if you enjoy it) please complete the junior membership form which can be found on the Club’s website and send it to Mrs Debbie Porter, 20 Chine Walk, West Parley, Ferndown – telephone 01202 580463.  The membership form contains important contact and medical information which is why we must insist on it being completed.  It also means we know how to send you future newsletters.

Membership fees

We are happy for new players to come along to 2 or 3 practices to see if they enjoy cricket and want to join the Club.  There is no charge for this.  However if you want to come along to more than 2 or 3 sessions we will expect you to become a paying member.

There is a £20 joining fee when you first become a member of the Club.  The payment of this fee entitles you to a Club shirt.

Thereafter the junior section operates a standing order membership system.  The annual membership fee is £90, payable in 12 monthly instalments of £7.50.  The membership fee is set at a level which covers our costs during the year (most of which arise between February and July).  Therefore please note that players are expected to pay for a full year and not to cancel their standing order during the winter.  As you can see above, we provide cricket throughout the year.  In exceptional circumstances we are prepared to accept a cheque for £90 at the beginning of the season.

The membership fee covers your membership of the Club, all junior matches and practices and entry to the Junior Awards Evening.  Please note that if you play for one of the adult sides you will be asked to pay the relevant junior match fee (currently £5 per game).

The standing order system reduces the administrative burden upon our managers and coaches and also provides a regular cash inflow to enable us to manage our finances accurately.  Standing order forms can be downloaded from the website or obtained from Mrs Debbie Porter whose contact details are set out above.

Kit

Players will be expected to play games in a white shirt and white trousers.  Club shirts are available for purchase from Dave Porter who can be contacted on 07713 003161.  As a significant proportion of matches are played on artificial wickets it is generally best to play in trainers although there may be occasions when it is possible to use spikes.  We recommend that all players have their own box.  Please make sure that your child is appropriately attired to keep the box in place – loose fitting boxer shorts are therefore not appropriate.

Please note that junior players will be required to wear helmets when batting.  The Club is able to provide kit (eg, bats, pads, gloves, helmets etc) to any player who does not have their own kit.

Awards evening

When the summer season has finished we hold a junior awards evening where we celebrate the successes of the season.

Adult cricket

Historically there has always been strong links between the junior section of the Club and the adult section.  Over half of the current 1st XI are home grown players.  Typically juniors start playing in the adult sides at around 14.  We have 4 Saturday sides, 2 Sunday sides and a Wednesday evening league side.  If you are interested in adult cricket please let your team manager know or alternatively contact one of the adult team captains.  Their details can be found in the Members Handbook and on our website.

The adult 1st and 2nd XIs play in Poole Park whilst the adult 3rd and 4th XIs play at Canford Park Arena.

Website

The Club has an excellent website at www.poolecricketclub.co.uk where you can find out the latest news and read match reports on recent games.  It is well worth a look.

Further coaching

If you feel that you would benefit from additional coaching, our Head Coach, Steve Wilson, offers one to one coaching sessions.  Further details can be obtained from Steve on 07725 953218.

Adult League Cricket - Are you interested in playing adult cricket this summer

Welcome to another season at Poole Town CC. In order to try and balance the desire to give as many people the opportunity to play adult league cricket with building a team we would really appreciate your input into how much you would be available this season.
Would you like to be considered regularly on Saturday or Sunday or both days?
Will you be available regularly between May 1st and August 30th?
Is this a big school year for you and as such will not be able to commit so much time to the delights of cricket - or at least not until the exams have finished?
Are you happy to be contacted at short notice on either a Saturday or Sunday to help out?
Do you have significant holidays booked? For example the Sat. 4ths skipper (me) is unavailable from Wed 11th August for the remainder of the season.
Please also bear in mind that the cricket club can only survive if those playing are paying their match fees. This season in Adult League cricket there is a £10 match fee for Working adults and a £5 match fee for Juniors, Seniors and the un-waged.
If you could respond to this request stating your name, age (if a junior), contact number - just to check we are up to date - and a brief answer to questions above. I am happy to accept your input via text to 07908 687631 or email to milner0205@btinternet.com or on a piece of paper to your nearest point of contact to PTCC Committee.
Hopefully this will give us the best chance of getting you playing and enjoying cricket.
Many thanks in advance

Andy Milner (Poole Town Saturday 4ths skipper)
