Match Report: Poole U9s vs Ellingham U9s

This was the second time we had played Ellingham having won the first match by 56 runs. Scott won the toss and chose to bat. After the last 2 matches, where we had lost too many cheap wickets, I asked the team to concentrate on protecting their stumps and looking to keep the score going with quick singles and having a go at anything wide. The team responded and did a fantastic job in fact for the first time this season we did not lose a wicket all game!

Conor and Josh opened the batting and made a really solid start taking all the quick singles they could and running really sharply between the creases. At the end of the first pair we were on a respectable runs. Next pair in were Nicholas and Jack. Again they showed some smart running, always keeping the fielders on their toes, and some lovely flowing drives from Nicholas they added a further 37 runs to take the score onto 62.  The third pairing were Katie and Harry who dominated the bowlers throughout. Katie, in particular, played some glorious shots scoring 31 off the bat in her 4 overs with 18 coming in 1 over. Ably helped by a solid and dependable Harry they put on a further 45 runs to take our score up to 107. Our regular, and ever dependable, last pair were Scott and Dan. As is usual with this pair, the running between the wickets was absolutely fantastic. Scott as ever dynamic with the bat, scoring 21 off the bat, ably supported by the rock solid Dan put on a further 31 to leave us with by far our highest score of the season on 148. This means we earned maximum batting points for the first time this season and what was particularly pleasing was that we scored 92 runs off the bat.

All our team bowled 2 overs with Conor and Nicholas sharing the wicket keeping duties. Conor and Josh made a fantastic start against Ellingham's first pair. Between them they only bowled 1 wide. limited Ellingham to just 15 runs but more importantly Josh took 3 wickets and Conor 1 leaving the Ellingham score on -9. Katie and Harry continued the good work with the next batting pair with Katie taking a wicket with the first ball. Again what was really pleasing was that this pair again only bowled 1 wide between them during their 4 over spell. Harry took a wicket in his last over. This pair of batsmen only scored 6 runs and with the 2 wickets taken their scored was now -14. Katie bowled particulary well, not conceding a single run during her 2 overs. The next pair of bowlers were Nicholas and Jack again provided the Ellingham batsmen with very little opportunity to score runs through some very good line and length bowling. The batsmen scored 11 runs but both Nicholas and Jack took a wicket each leaving Ellingham still on -15. The last pair of batsmen were Ellingham's strongest pair and did well to stand up to some very quick bowling from Scott. They managed to take the final score onto 17.

The team had their best performance of the season by some way, very well captained by Scott, and showed great encouragement and support for each other all day. They have continued to improve all season and are now becoming a very good all round side. There were some notable performances today. Nicholas Broad was spinning the ball a good 1.5 to 2 feet on every delivery and played some great shots with the bat, Scott as usual batted bowled and fielded really well as did Katie George. All the team batted. bowled and in particular fielded very well. The unanimous man of the match however was Josh Cooper whose bowling has improved enormously, bats solidly and is always encouraging and supporting in the field.

Poole vs Bournemouth - Match Report:
For the second time this season we played on a grass track. Bournemouth opened the batting. Conor Waring and Harry Coburn opened the bowling for us and did so well against a strong Bournemouth side. Both Conor and Harry bowled well with Bournemouth only scoring 12 runs from the first pair with Harry taking a wicket. With the 2nd Bournmouth pair coming to the crease Nicholas Broad shared the bowling with Daniel and Jack and they restricted Bournemouth to only adding another 10 runs to the first pairs total with Jack taking a wicket in their last over. So at the half way point Bournemouth were on 222.
Jack continued to bowl the first over against the third pair and shared the four over spell with his brother Josh, Callum and the final over from Scott. The third pair batted well and scored 33 runs from their 4 overs. The final pair faced 2 overs from Scott and an over each from Conor and Nicholas. They added runs but some accurate bowling, with Scott taking 2 wickets and Nicholas 1, restricted them to a further 22 runs and their final score of 277.

Conor and Josh opened the batting and made a solid start and were scoring well but we unfortuantely lost 3 wickets in the last 8 balls which meant they ended their overs with the score on 204. Nicholas and Callum were the second pair. As with the first pair we scored runs, with some lovely shots from Nicholas, but again lost 3 wickets which meant that the score had moved on to 207. Harry and Jack, scored well and ran well between the stumps, but again we lost runs through losing a further 5 wickets. As Scott and Dan came in for the last pair we were on 194. The pair batted solidly throughout, hitting 3 lovely fours between them, and running really well between the stumps and only conceded 1 wicket (a run out) in the penultimate ball. We ended
on 215.

To be fair Bournemouth had a really strong bowling attack but it was lost wickets that unfortunately lost us this match. We scored runs well, 51 off the bat, but lost 12 wickets that reduced our score by 72 runs. The team are improving every week and this is one area that we will work on

Poole vs Christchurch U9s - Match Report

For the second time in the league this season we managed to beat Christchurch, this time at Christchurch. Poole bowled first with Conor and Jack bowling the first 4 overs between them and although they did not take any wickets they bowled accurately and well to probably Christchurch's best 2 batsmen who ended their 4 overs on 229. Nicholas and Dan then bowled the next four overs only conceding 3 runs from the bat between them and taking 1 wicket each. Josh and Hannah continued the good work only conceding 8 runs from the bat. With the final Christchurch pair coming in to bat Christchurch were on 252. In his first hardball match for the club, Callum McGregor paired up with our Captain Scott to bowl the last four overs. Between them Scott and Callum again only conceded 9 runs from the bat with Callum taking a wicket and Scott 2. This meant Christchurch ended on 255.

Connor and Josh opened the batting with a really solid performance. With Connor scoring 22, including four 4's, and Josh keeping the score moving with quick singles they ended without losing a wicket and the score on 234. Next into bat were Nicholas and Jack. As with the first pair Nicholas and Jack ran really well between the wickets for lots of quick singles and 2's with some big hits from Nicholas. Only losing 1 wicket each they took the score onto 246. They were replaced at the crease by Hannah and Callum who faced some very accurate bowling. Although the lost 2 wickets each they kept the runs going with some great running between the stumps to end with the score on 239. So as the last pair, Scott and Dan, moved into bat we needed 17 to win from the last 4 overs. Scott and Dan made a solid start with some quick singles for the first 2 overs. Then in their 3rd over Scott let loose scoring 15 from the over (including 3 fours) which edged us in front on 258 with the last over to come. With the pressure mounting, or so I thought (obviously for me and not Scott and Dan), Scott and Dan continued to move the score on with some fluent batting and running scoring a further 11 runs off the last over to make it to 269 at the end and winning by 14 runs.

This was a really solid team performance. The bowling and fielding was good throughout but the most pleasing part of the day for me was seeing 77 runs scored off the bat which is the best we have done all season. Man of the match went to Scott for his 25 runs, 2 wickets and his leadership and encouragement on the pitch.

Match Report: Poole vs Ellingham

On a very warm Saturday in the Forest Ellingham won the toss and decided to bowl first. This was the first match for the majority of the Poole side to play on grass rather than an artificial surface. We agreed before starting our batting that keeping the number of wickets we lost to a minimum was important. Our usual openers Harry Coburn and Conor Waring got us off to a very good start as is becoming usual. For their four overs they only lost 1 wicket and ended with a respectable 19 runs on the board. They were replaced by Hannah Griffiths and Jack Cooper who again only lost 1 wicket and took the score on to 26. This was the last wicket Ellingham were to take for the afternoon as the final two pairings of Joe Milton & Josh Cooper and Scott Currie and Katie George piled on the runs. Joe and Josh took the score on to 249 and Scott and Katie produced some fine strokes, including 6 fours, to take our score on to 85 at the end of our innings which is our highest score so far this season.

It was also our best performance bowling and fielding. The encouragement and chatter in the field was really good to hear from such a young side. Everybody, including Harry Coburn our usual wicket keeper, bowled 2 overs and we managed to keep the number of runs lost through wides and no balls down to 17. Harry and Connor opened the bowling and bowling very accurately. Harry took 2 wickets and Conor 1 which meant that Ellingham were on -4 at the end of their 4 overs. Hannah and Jack  kept up the accuracy and both took a wicket which meant that Ellingham were still at -3 at the end of their 4 overs. Joe and Josh again kept the accuracy going with Joe taking 2 wickets and Ellingham finishing on 9 at the end of their 4 overs. The final pairing of Scott and Katie proved to be very fast on the grass track. Both took a wicket each although  the slightest nick off the bat saw the ball heading very quickly to the boundary. Ellingham finished on 29 runs.

We won the match mainly because we only lost 2 wickets in our innings and then kept our fielding very tight and kept the wickets falling throughout (9 in total). A very good team performance. Scott decided to give the man of the match award to Joe Milton for the most improved performance both with the bat and bowling.

Poole U9 vs Parley 15/05/2010

Parley won the toss and decided to bat. Connor Waring opened the bowling really well with a wicket maiden. Everybody in the team, with the exception of our wicket keep Harry, bowled and all bowled really well and at the end of Parley's inning we had only conceded 35 extra's (our lowest to date). Both Conor and Jack Cooper took 2 wickets with Nicholas Broad also taking a wicket. The team's fielding is really beginning to improve and we managed to keep Parley's score down to 48 at the end of their innings.

We batted well and scored as many runs off the bat as Parley (40). There were solid batting performances from Harry Coburn, Scott Currie and Nicholas Broad but at the end we fell just short of Parley;s score with 36. We were close to winning but unfortunately we lost more wickets than Parley which was the difference between the teams on the day.

Man of the match went to Scott Currie who captained the side well, always encouraging and making some good choices on bowlers and fielding positions as well as his usual fiery bowling and batting.

Poole U9 vs Christchurch -
1.05.2010

Christchurch won the toss and decided to bat. Christchurch started well and the first pair batted through their 4 overs without losing any wickets and scoring 22 runs meaning their score was 222. However we began to talk to each other in the field and encourage each other when bowling and took 2 wickets from the next four overs. And so although the next pair scored 8 runs the score at the end of their session had reduced to 216. The third pair came in to bat but the game turned in our favour with a fantastic over from Katie George who took 3 wickets and conceded no runs and this reduced their score to 198. We then maintained this performance through to the end of the match taking a further 6 wickets at regular intervals. Christchurch finished on 199. All of our team bowled really well and everybody contributed to the bowling performance . In particluar our captain Scott Currie, Katie George and Josh Cooper bowled really well with wickets also taken by Dan Harper and Jack Cooper.

When we batted everybody contributed. I asked everybody to defend their wickets when the ball was heading toward their stumps, to leave the wide balls off the track and to 'have a go' at anything else. I was really pleased that all 4 pairs kept our score moving and we only lost 3 wickets. At the end of the match this proved to be what separated the two teams as we ended on 253 and won the game. Conor Waring and Scott Currie were the highest scorer of runs off the bat.

Overall I was really pleased with how the side played in their first league game. I thought Scott did a fantastic job as captain, always talking and encouraging and in choosing who bowled and the field placings. He also made the choice that everybody would bowl at least 2 overs. I thought that Harry did really well behind the stumps (especially standing up to Scott's bowling) but at the end of the match Scott and I agreed that due to her fielding, batting and in particluar her bowling performance the player of the match was Katie George.

The summary of the match stats are below. If there is anything that is incorrect I apologise now as the scorers found it difficult to distinguish between some of the children at times but generally I think they are pretty accurate
