U13 Div 1 2009
17/8/09 Cup Final
Poole U13 v Swanage at Colehill
On a sunny evening, Dom won the toss and elected to bat. We had a shaky start as Tim fell to accurate bowling from Swanage. Next in was James and the couple accumulated an impressive partnership of 54 before James retired with a majestic innings of 34, including 2 massive sixes (one hitting the roof of the clubhouse) for his last 2 balls. Dom was out at 15, trying to hurry the score along. Sam batted with style and intelligence retiring on 31. Alex and Josh were unlucky, out before they got into their stride and Dec contributed with 16. Dan and Dobby had a tremendous last wicket partnership of 26 runs as Poole posted an impressive total of 160. Dobby hitting a six with a wonderful stroke over the bowlers head.
Swanage batted valiantly, but it was always going to be a hard ask. Poole kept the run rate down with tight bowling from Dec, Dom, Alex and Dan, but Swanage kept their wickets intact. Fielding was excellent, with every one of our 10 players showing their skill and expertise in the field. The first wicket was claimed by Sam, caught by Dec. Then James came onto bowl and the second and third wickets fell, LBW and a stumping by Tim with some nifty wicket keeping. In his second spell, Dec added variety to his bowling and with his last two slower balls he claimed 2 wickets and is on a hat trick when he next bowls. Dobby closed the innings with an accurate last over. Swanage came up short, making 123 in their innings.
Man of the Match was James Dodds, for his 2 wickets and his blistering innings.

Well done Poole, Blackmore Vale winners, league champions and winners of the cup. We have had a tremendous season, always playing with skill and style and we are immensely proud of all the boys who played for us. As the boys go off to their various schools, there will be some changes to the lineup, giving newcomers and those who don’t readily share the limelight, a chance to shine.
Thanks to the Wilson brothers for providing excellent coaching sessions and all the parents that have supported us through rain and shine. Special thanks to ‘official score board operator’ Nigel, scorer Phil, umpire Mark and our brilliant coach Stuart Hand, whose words of wisdom and encouragement, the boys have really appreciated.
Monday 10/8/09 League Match
Suttoners v Poole U13
Poole arrived at Kinson Manor with some unfamiliar faces, due to County, District and holiday commitments, but with Monty at the helm the boys were confident that they would secure their final victory of the season and with it the League title. Josh and Miles opened the batting, giving Poole a good start before they were both bowled with scores of 16 and 20 respectively. Monty and Lewis were next in line, Monty maintaining the steady start with a commendable 17 before he too was bowled. Lewis continued to act as an anchor whilst Dom Vital top scored with 24, including a massive 6 hit over the pavilion. Alex Burton and Lewis were not out at the close of the innings 108 for 4.
Josh took a wicket with the first ball of the innings, achieving a wicket maiden, which set the tone for the other Poole Town bowlers. Tom Robinson making his debut for the Under 13’s duly obliged with a wicket in his first over. Josh, in fine form bowled another maiden, ending with 1 for 9 from 3 overs. Tom gained another wicket in his third over, caught by Monty – 2 for 18 from 3 overs. Miles bowled economically and was unlucky not to get a wicket (0 for 7 from 3 overs) George Harper bowled magnificently at the other end, getting 3 wickets, all to catches, including a caught and bowled (3 for 9 from 3 overs). Dom Heatley cleaned up the innings, bowling their number 5 batsman. Lewis stepped up as wicket keeper and despite his fears that he was ‘rusty’ he played his part well.
Well done to all the players who turned out for Poole in their hour of need, you all performed brilliantly.
CHAMPIONS!!!
Spirit of Cricket South and West Regional Final played at Axminster
30/7/09
1,600 teams from England, Scotland and Wales, took part in this competition. We were now down to 4 regional final play offs, each involving 4 teams.
Poole v Bristol
Having not lost a match this season and only one last season, Poole could be criticised for a little complacency. Dom won the toss and asked Bristol to bat and my how they batted! Their first 3 batsmen were tremendously strong, assisted by some wayward bowling. They galloped to a total of 103 from 14 overs. Dan and James halted their assault and Sam bowled magnificently with 3 wickets for 20 runs in his spell.(0057) In reply, Dom was an early casualty, but Josh and James both batted beautifully, keeping ahead of the run rate and putting Poole in a strong position. (James retiring with 32 and Josh(0026) eventually losing his wicket on 27) Poole then suffered a middle order batting collapse and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Only Tim, Sam and Dan showing any resistance. Poole were all out for 104.

Poole v Hatherley and Redding
After some soul searching, a few home truths and a nice big lunch, Poole were out to restore some pride and to show the other teams our true capabilities. Dom won the toss yet again and decided to bat. We batted cautiously, 7 of our first 8 batsmen contributing well. Boundaries were hard to come by on a wet outfield. We reached a total of 106 all out in the 20th over. Monty volunteered to keep wicket, to ensure that Tim could bowl. Poole made a good start with the opening team of Dec and Dom both getting 2 wickets each in their first 2 overs, H and R were 24 for 4 by the end of the 4th over. Josh took a tremendous low diving catch from Alex Jones’s bowling adding to his catch from Dom in an earlier over. But H and R added valuable runs as the ground dried and boundaries were easier to hit, most importantly, they continued to leak wickets. Poole never gave up, drawing upon their fighting spirit, even in the 16th over when H and R only needed 10 runs from 4 overs. Poole focused on the 2 wickets that they required to win. James bowled the 17th over, 5 dot balls and on the last ball of his over, with the pressure mounting, the batsman hit the ball to Declan at mid on and took off for a quick single. Dec scooped up the ball cleanly, winging it in for a direct hit, OUT! They still needed 10 runs from 3 overs, Poole needed only 1 wicket. Those that weren’t circling the pitch to the right (a tried and tested way for the opposition to lose a wicket) were on the edge of their seats, Dom unleashed our secret weapon, Tim Hargreaves. His first ball was a dot as the batsman swung and missed. When the next ball was bowled the batsman skipped down the wicket to smash it for 6, in a flash, Monty had the ball in his hands and the bails off, the square leg umpire had his finger up, signaling a victory for Poole.
We are immensely proud of our team; everyone played their part in reaching the last 16, fielding is just as important as bowling and batting as it proved against Hand R. It is worth noting that North Cotswolds, who went through, only beat Hatherley and Redding by one run in the last over. On the basis that we only lost one game, we reckon that makes us equal 5th best team in Britain! It was a brilliant day and we wish North Cotswolds the best of luck in the finals.
BLACKMORE VALE CHAMPIONS!

Poole under 13’s met Broadstone in the final of the Blackmore Vale and County cup on Friday 19th June at Shillingstone a cloudy, chilly evening. Broadstone batted first and were soon in trouble on 44 for 5. Tight bowling and excellent fielding, with 4 run outs caused the problems for Broadstone. There was a nonchalant catch by Dom Hand and 2 direct hits by Dec Quinn and Sam Harrison. Broadstone innings ended on 82 for 7 wickets. In reply, on a wicket difficult to bat on, the openers scored steadily, Dom retiring on 32 and Tim eventually caught with 75 on the board. Sam and James cruised past the total need after 16.1 overs. Well done to all the team ,for their individual contributions to this team win.
Monday 3/8/09 League Match
Poole U13 V Bournemouth Saxons
Poole made a good start bowling, but with the score on 27 for 1(Harrison) from 9 overs, the rain became too heavy to continue and the match was abandoned.
Poole U13 v Bournemouth Saxons Cup semi-final
27/7/09
On a rare sunny evening Bournemouth won the toss and had no hesitation in asking Poole to field on a perfect grass wicket. Dom opened the bowling, producing a good tight first over. Declan forced the break through with a tremendous double wicket maiden, Dom followed on with another wicket and in the final over of his spell he produced a wicket maiden (2 for 5). Bournemouth were reeling on 18 for 4. Bournemouth mounted a fight back and it was Alex Jones who scattered the bails for their 5th and 7th batsmen (2 for 7). Dan bowled well, gaining a caught and bowled and Declan ended the innings with his third wicket. (3 for 7)
Chasing a total of 60, Poole were never in trouble. Tim batted with panache(0011), retiring on 32, Dom, Sam(0006) and Dan contributed to the total, with the loss of 3 wickets.
Monday 20/7/09 Broadstone B v Poole U13
League match played at The Delph
After very poor management, devotion above and beyond the call of duty, Poole eventually fielded 8 players at The Delph, in a reduced over match. Poole won the toss and Broadstone were asked to bat first. Declan and Dom picked up wickets: but the pick of the bowlers was Alex with an excellent 2 for 5 from 4 overs. Broadstone eventually reached a total of 83 for 5.
Dom and Josh opened the batting with a quick fire burst, scoring 33 from 4 overs before they were both out (Dom for 8 and Josh for 18). Sam (24) and Monty (19) then scored quickly, reaching the total in the 9th over.
Thanks to the parents of Dom, Dan and Monty who drove miles around the countryside without once complaining.
Sunday 19/7/09 Spirit of Cricket ( Blackmore Vale Cup)
Poole U 13 v St Cross ( Hampshire winners)
This was an important toss to win, with a wet out field and overcast morning, which Dom achieved with his Dad’s lucky coin! St Cross were put into bat and runs were hard to come by, with their number 3 batsman the only one to score freely. Declan bowled both the openers with swinging balls (2 for 11) and James also picked up a wicket (1 for 26). There were wickets also for Monty with a fine spell of 3 for 18 and Sam with 2 for 6, both balls launched in the air and caught by the safe hands of Dom. St Cross were all out in the 19th over for 84.
Poole were quietly confidant, but also found it difficult to score with tight bowling from St Cross. The openers gave us a good start with James retiring and Dom, playing a captain’s innings of supporting James and scoring a valuable 14, before being caught behind. From the 13th over with 58 on the score board, the wickets started to tumble. With 5 batsmen all falling to tight bowling and frayed nerves. In the 19th over, we required one to win and after 4 dot balls. Alex remained confidant, feeling that the victory was always in the bag and it was eventually realised with a leg bye.
Thanks to George for fielding as a substitute and for the tree, which St Cross managed to hit which gave us 4 runs instead of 1! All nails bitten down to the quick, roll on the next round.
Poole u 13 v Christchurch 13/7/09
League match
Once again Dom won the toss and decided to bat first on a rain affected evening. Poole posted an impressive total of 177 for4 wickets, with excellent ‘knocks’ from Dom, Sam, Alex Jones, and Declan. Alex hit a massive 6 and Sam retired after 13 balls.(0006) Heavy showers meant that the overs were reduced to 18 and a chasing total of 160. In reply Christchurch reached 67 for 5 wickets. Lewis and Alex Burton picked up single wickets and Declan 2 for 7(0051).
Poole u13 v Corfe Mullen 7/7/09
Quarter Final of the Cup
Poole won the toss and decided to bat first. Poole cruised to a total of 164 for the loss of 4 wickets, with Dom and Alex Jones retiring. There were valuable contributions from Tim (23)(0011) and Josh(0026) (29 not out). Corfe Mullen struggles in their reply, the wickets were shared, with 6 bowlers gaining single wickets, Declan 2 for 8. Poole face Bournemouth Saxons in the semi-final.
9/6/09 Semi-Final Blackmore Vale Cup at Bryanston
U13 Poole v Dorchester
Dorchester won the toss and decided to bowl. Poole set off at a cracking pace, with Dom Hand and Tim scoring freely. Dom was eventually caught behind with 18 on the board, whilst Tim retired. Monty retired scoring 30 in a stylish ‘knock’ and Alex followed scoring a 6 in his innings of 25. Josh made a valuable contribution at the end of the innings and Poole were all out for a total of 149.
Dorchester found it more difficult to score relying on wayward bowling. Monty 3 for 15 from 3 overs and Alex 0 for 9 from 3 overs. Declan was the pick of the fielders with an impressive run out dislodging the bails with only one stump to aim at. Bad light stopped play in the 18th over, Poole victorious with a faster run rate.
It was a pleasure to play Dorchester with both teams playing in the spirit of cricket.
Poole v Winton away under 13
